Book Review: A Time to Dance

A Time to Dance by Karen Kingsbury

Karen Kingsbury is a well-known Christian fiction and children’s book author. Her Baxter family series were incredibly popular and it seems these books in the Women of Faith series will be just as wonderful. A Time to Dance takes the reader on an emotional journey of a husband and wife who are trying to reclaim their once vibrant and certain love for eachother.

Karen Kingsbury is my all-time favorite author. Her books, although fictional, give insight into troubles that many of us face during our lives and provide scriptural truths on how to deal with them. This book was definitely an emotional roller coaster the entire way through. I went from laughing to crying and ended with a certain peace in my heart that if you listen to Him, He will lead you down the right path. Don’t read this book unless you are prepared to stay up all night because you can’t put the book down. You’ll also need some tissues!

BEWARE! Clairol $2 Coupon DOESN'T WORK for Herbal Essence

Have you seen people posting about this deal where they say to use the $2/1 Clairol product coupon from the 10/31 PG on Herbal Essence products?  Well, tried it today and the coupon beeps.  It may be technically correct that the coupon should work, but the reality is that it does not.  To make matters harder to argue in the store (not that I would....I pick my battles), the only pictures on the coupon are for the hair color boxes.

If you get a cashier that overrides....lucky day for you!

Book Review: The Treasure of God's Word

The Treasure of God's Word: Celebrating 400 Years of the King James Bible by Jack Countryman

This book is bound in what feels like leather and has gold edged pages to give it a more collectible feel than just another book to read. I consider this book to be a devotional or quick scripture reference. There are 45 distinct topics that are covered and provide the entire referenced scripture verse. Some of the topics range from God’s grace to humility.

I enjoyed the short opening which gave the history of how the King James Version came into existence; it was very enlightening and provided historical reference that I had not found in any other book I have read. The content of the book was well organized and provided the entire verse instead of just a portion and a reference back to the original verse in the Bible. I really don’t think that other than the opening few pages with the historical references, that this book seemed any different than other devotions or topical books of its kind. I wasn’t much of a fan of the “old” look and feel of the book; it seems strangely out of place when compared to other reference or devotional books. The pages are nice and well suited to a devotional gift book, however.

Book Review: The Grace of God

The Grace of God by Andy Stanley

The Grace of God is a book that seeks to explain the hard issues people have with understanding grace. Stanley explains how the God of the Old Testament is not any different than the God of the New Testament, but that our perception is that God is different because of the way He uses His grace. Stanley also points out God’s grace in various Bible stories that we don’t often look at in the light of grace.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it changed my outlook on life. The main message I got out of the book is that grace is not fair, it is not deserved, and there is nothing we can do (or not do) to obtain grace (or lose it). Grace is God’s gift and He can dispense it as He sees fit. When you look at grace in this light, you realize that sometimes bad people get a break or forgiveness when we think they don’t deserve it…maybe that’s God’s grace. Who are we to judge what is fair for God to do and what is not…HE IS GOD, WE ARE NOT.

Book Review: Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado

Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado

Outlive Your Life gives the reader assurance that their life matters and that although no one person can do everything needed in our world, every person can do something that will make a difference in someone’s life. Max Lucado urges his readers to realize that it is their Christian duty to help others in need, just as Christ did in his 33 years here on earth.

I have never been a fan of Max Lucado, although I have no specific reason why, so I was not sure what to expect in this book. I was worried that the book would water down our Christian obligation to living a godly life and be helpful to others. I was pleasantly surprised when I got into the book because it’s just the opposite of what I expected. Lucado presents Biblical proof of our obligation to others in need and gives real-life advice on how we can all accomplish this goal. We all tend to forget that we are not called to change the world, but to give out the gospel and live in His image. We may not all be called to the missions field in Africa, but we can all pray for those in need or provide love to those around us. This book gives us practical suggestions of things we can do to make a difference in this book.

Freebies from Crest!!

I don't recall signing up for this, but last night when I got home, I found a FedEx box waiting for me. Inside of it was a whole Crest whitening kit. It came with:

1- Crest Whitestrips professional 2 hour treatment (good for 3 mos)
1- Crest Whitening toothpaste (some new kind I've never seen)
1- Crest Whitening dental rinse (some new kind I've never seen)
1- Crest Whitening toothbrush

Apparently I signed up to be a part of their trial group. I sign up for so many things that I honestly can't remember where I saw this at to sign up for. The letter inside said that I have been chosen to be a trial panelist of these products and they'll send me a survey to complete in a week or so!

COOL!!

Book Review: Seeds of Turmoil

Seeds of Turmoil by Bryan Wright

Seeds of Turmoil is a Biblical reference and discovery for today’s issues in the Middle East. Many people fight for peace in the Middle East and wonder why there always seems to be conflict and hatred coming out of that part of the world. This book takes you back to the very beginning, the book of Genesis, and traces the issues and lineage of the conflict through time.

I was excited to read this book because I wanted to finally understand, from a true Biblical perspective, the reasons for the ever-present conflict in the Middle East. After all, my husband has served in two wars in the Iraq region and is getting ready to serve in Afghanistan, so I had a good reason to want to learn. I was initially disappointed in the book, as the first few chapters kept repeating the same thing over and over again….yes, Abraham and Sarah made a mistake…got it. I am glad I kept reading though because it did teach me a lot and finally moved on from the Abraham/Sarah issue. However, the book ABRUPTLY ended in my opinion. I was left flipping through the Glossary, thinking there had to be more….it has to wrap up somewhere. Nope, it just drops you off without warning. I assume the author covered everything that needed to be covered, but there was no clear ending…no wrap up or conclusion. Well, even with those faults, it’s a good book to read and provides lots of Scriptural proof to back up the conflict in the Middle East.

Found a New Coupon Home!

I was checking out CravingSavings' blog and saw a link for Our Coupon Home.  I decided to give it a try and join.  I have been very pleased with the members on this board and the things their site covers.  It's not as big as some other boards I belong to like HCW, but that actually makes it better for those of you starting out in coupon boards.

Check it out and join HERE!  Let me know what you think after you've joined and looked around!

You can also access their site any time by clicking on their button on the right side of my page...it's labeled 'Our Coupon Home'.

$1.50 MM on Carmex Moisture Plus

Right now the Carmex Moisture Plus lip treatments are supposed to be on sale for $2.99 with a $2 RR.  Well, I went to get one yesterday and my $1/1 coupon beeped because the Carmex only rang up at $0.50!  Heck, I ditched the coupon and bought the Carmex at $0.50, hoping that it would still spit out the $2 RR.  IT DID!!  I did the deal again today and it is still working.

If you get the Wags coupon policy from here, you should be able to use the $1/1 coupon (no prints available) if you still have it and have the coupon adjusted down.  Now, I'll warn you, this is a new policy for most Wags (especially in our area), so you may get a little flack from the cashier.  I'd gently show them the policy that is on THEIR website!

I personally use:
Coke codes (Coke products, Powerade, Minute Maid, etc)
Pop Tart codes (inside specially marked flavor card packages-code printed on inside of the box)

I can use to trade for codes I need:
Huggies Enjoy the Ride points (on/inside packages)
Pampers points (on/inside packages)
Amazon diaper discount codes (card insert in various magazines...Parents, etc during September)

If you have anything that you won't use....just send it to me in an email.

Got this in my email today.  Not a fantastic coupon, but if you catch these on sale and you're brand loyal....it could work out pretty well for you.  Mueller's hardly ever has coupons out and when they do, they're usually .55/3 or something like that.

Walgreens Clearance Alert

The Wags on 419/221 has:

Vegetable seed packets for .09/ea (back endcap by shaving supplies) - I got several of the carrots

Ball canning jars for about $6/case (Walmart probably has them priced better) - they were all out of the lids which were marked at $1.32/ea....this would have been nice to pair with the $1/1 canning item q from the 8/1 RP.  There were also $1/1 jar case q's in the 8/1 RP.

Anyone found any other good clearance deals at Wags?

Check out their blog post about the video game swag code hunt. It looks worse than it is. First, get to the right section of the video games (hint is "where xx and xx were BORN...i.e., BEGINNING...uuhhhummm). Then, know who Mr. Padre is (look at a pic of him on wikipedia) and you'll be able to put 2 and 2 together. It only took me a couple minutes to find it.

Book Review: The Boy Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews

This book is the children's version of The Butterfly Effect, but honestly.....I liked this one better!!

The Boy Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews

The Boy Who Changed the World shows, in a simplistic yet powerful way, the effect one person, one decision, had on the life of everyone living in the past, living now, or who ever will live. The author talks about the life of George Washington Carver and the effect people had on him and the effects his discoveries have had on people today in a way that children can easily understand. This book is filled with reverse chronological cause and effects that give you pause to the effect your life has on the rest of humanity.

This book is not just enjoyable and relevant for children, but also for adults. Such simple thoughts, simple statements, small actions that this book covers have had a profound impact on all of humanity. This book is thought-provoking and truly makes you see that every action, every word, every person has an impact on everyone around you and on the future. You can not read this book and ever see your life as menial or insignificant. I actually enjoyed this children’s book more than I did its adult counterpart, The Butterfly Effect.

Book Review: The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters by Andy Andrews

The Butterfly Effect begins with the story of a colonel in the Union Army and the effect one man, one decision, had on the life of everyone living then, living now, or who ever will live. The author also talks about the life of George Washington Carver and the effect people had on him and the effects his discoveries have had on people today. This book is filled with reverse chronological cause and effects that give you pause to the effect your life has on the rest of humanity.

At first glance, I thought the book to be simple and that it couldn’t possibly be moving or thought provoking in such short text. However, as I reached the middle of the book I realized that I was completely wrong. Such simple thoughts, simple statements, small actions that this book covers have had a profound impact on all of humanity. This book is thought-provoking and truly makes you see that every action, every word, every person has an impact on everyone around you and on the future. You can not read this book and ever see your life as menial or insignificant.

Book Review: Wonders Never Cease

As most of you know, I belong to BookSneeze, a site that brings together a community of bloggers to review books.  I just finished Wonders Never Cease and I can truly tell you that I could barely put the book down.  What I learned (again--you need to constantly remind yourself of this):  When you hear God leading you, you need to follow, regardless of your excuses or how you view your present circumstances.  If God is calling you somewhere, He's not going to let you fall when you follow Him.  Okay, on to the official book review....

Wonders Never Cease by Tim Downs

Summary

Wonders Never Cease is a fictional series of events, but the book does a wonderful job at describing the effects our lives, our choices, have on many other people’s lives. A man’s greed leads him to concoct a plan to portray himself as an angel to a woman who has just been in a serious accident. His plan, however, spirals out of control and ends up bringing numerous other people into the fold. His greed consumes him and ultimately destroys his career and his relationships.

My Reactions

This book is a must-read for all kinds of people. I found it impossible to put the book down and was gripped by the way the main character’s choices had an impact on so many other people around him. Greed is a powerful force and can destroy more than just your own life. So many people go through life with a closed mind, but as one of the characters points out in the book, you can’t accept a possibility unless you’re open to the possibility. This book makes you realize that although it is easy to see the mistakes in someone else’s life, it is not always so easy to see your own. You have to keep an open mind and let God direct your life or it can go devastatingly wrong, like it did for the main character.

100 FREE Business/Gift Cards

I just read about this hot deal on Hip2Save and decided to give it a try.

Go to Zazzle and order one of their business cards or gift tags for FREE (up to $16.95).  I couldn't find one I wanted for a gift tag at that price, so I chose this one and paid just $0.80 for 100 of them!

Once you add your item to the cart, proceed through to checkout.  When it asks you for your promo code, enter ZAZSHIPSFREE to get free shipping.  Don't worry, the shipping will still show until the last page where you need to change your shipping to ECONOMY-No Tracking before you finalize your order (this happened after the PayPal page for me).

You can even order the nice gift tags for free, but they only come in packs of 20.  I suggest choosing a normal business card that you like and personalize it as a gift tag so you can get 100 cards for free!

7 Swagbucks- expires 2:00 pm EST

15% off Children's Place

Enter this coupon code at checkout to receive an additional 15% off your entire order: Z7AZKRJZ8A or F9A2010 (you can't use both).

Shipping is a flat $5 no matter how much you get and right now there is a Buy One Get One 50% Off Denim Event going on and this promo can be used in conjunction with the 15% off promo code.

I've found The Children's Place has GREAT clearance deals and make for some super cute, but super cheap gifts.

You can also print this coupon to take to the store.

CVS Clearance & Update

CVS Clearance: Chesnut St/Main St. in Salem

* Vick's (vaporizer or humidifier....I can't recall) - regular price $45, on clearance for $11. They had 2 left yesterday.

* Pantene shampoo/conditioner 75% off (I didn't price check) - there are also $1/1 or $1/2 coupons out there.

* Fitness items

Found these on an endcap before you get to the greeting card aisle.

CVS Update: 221 Cave Spring

Seems as if this CVS is no longer open at 7:00 am. I went yesterday and the place was dark and a new store hours sign appeared on the door showing the hours start at 8:00 am. I was just there last week and heard nothing about this change, so I'm not sure what's going on. Thankfully, the CVS at Ridgewood Farms is still open at 7:00 am, although I really don't like it there because the manager is the only one working in the morning and he isn't very friendly or helpful at all. Oh well, at least he's not a coupon hater.

Food Lion Clearances

Food Lion: 419 in Roanoke

Clearance items:
* Beechnut jar baby food
* TONS of deodorants of every kind...all about $2/ea (I can't imagine paying for deodorant at ALL)
* Tons of HBA items like creams, polish, and makeup
* Carmex lip balm
* One a Day drink mix sticks (box of about 10 I think)

All of these clearance items are in cardboard displays near the dairy section.

DIY: Pasta Drying Rack

So, now that I have my new KitchenAid mixer, my wonderful hubby got me the pasta roller and cutter attachment kit to go with it (and, oh my goodness, it makes making pasta SOOOO much easier).  Well, I had been eyeballing this pasta drying rack on Amazon for the next purchase with my Swagbucks gift cards.  However, I always like to see if I can make something that suits my purposes with what I have laying around or something I can buy for cheap.  So, here's what I did.....

1. Bought a large (3/4" x 6') wooden dowel from Walmart for under $2
2. Used 5 smaller wooden dowels that I had lying around (I think 1/8 or 1/4" x 6')
3. Used a small piece of plywood that we had left over from something and cut it into a 1' x 1' square
4. Cut the large dowel in half and drilled 3-4 holes in different directions along the length of the dowel in the same size as the smaller dowels
5. Cut the small dowels into 2-3 pieces each
6. Screwed the large dowel to the center of the base
7. Inserted the small dowels into the holes of the large dowel

Voila!!!!  I have a pasta drying rack that can easily be disassembled for storage and it only cost me a couple bucks for 2 of them instead of the almost $40 for one of them like below.  If I think about it, I'll take some pictures of mine.  Now, it's not going to win any beauty contests, but who cares.....I didn't spend $40/ea!  And....if I choose, I can paint it or decorate it any way I want to....can't do that with the $40 KitchenAid one.....!

Swagbucks! Score 7 SB's

Go to the Swagbucks blog and read the clue under Music Monday: Sam Cooke. You can do a super easy search to get the answer and win yourself 7 Swagbucks!

Cheap Canning Items

For those of you who can or preserve, you can get some cheap items at Walmart with the coupons from the $1/1 8-1-10 RP coupons on Ball items. The pectin is about $1.56 and the regular mouth lids are $1.50. With the coupon, it makes for some great deals! I'd hold on to the $1/1 Ball case of jars coupon until closer to the expiration date of 9/30....these jars always go on clearance or sale around then.

Good Deals!

For those of you who haven't already done the CVS deal this week for Conair (get $5 ECB wyb any Conair hair or shaving appliances, PSA $4.99).....make sure you check out the store clearance section first.  I found a clearance Conair flat iron for $6.49.  So, after my $5 ECB, I only paid $1.49 for a good flat iron (I'm thinking Christmas present for my daughter).  There were also some nice curling irons with heat shields for about $7.69....great price for a name brand hair tool!

Also, if you haven't already done the Crest Pro-Health rinse deal yet ($5 ECB wyb $10 Crest/Oral-B/Scope products)....keep an eye out for bonus bottles.  I found a 1L bottle that had a bonus night rinse bottle attached.  I crossed my fingers that this one would produce the ECB too and it did!  Don't forget to use the $2 coupon from the 8/1 PG.

Good news for those of us doing the Soda Pop Dessert Topper deal at Kroger.  There is no limit to how many catalinas you can do in one order.  I bought 4 bottles @ $2.79/ea, used (4) .55/1 coupons from the 6/13 SS and received (4) $2.50 OYNO catalinas.  That's a $0.26 MM each!  Anyone had the guts enough to try and see if these catalinas roll yet???  I wasn't able to find these at the Kroger on Brambleton across from the car wash at Ridgewood Farms, however....Lakeside and Cave Spring Krogers both carry these.

Restaurant Coupons

I wanted to try Restaurant.com before I posted about it and I can tell you I had a GREAT experience with them.  One of the sites I regularly read posted about an 80% coupon code for restaurant.com, so I decided it was time to give it a try.

I didn't immediately recognize the participating restaurants in our area that were listed, but thought that this is a great time to try something new since I had a date night with my hubby coming up.  I chose a $25 gift certificate to Fork in the Alley.

Here's how it worked:
  • Restaurant.com $25 gift certificate normally costs $10 for this restaurant.
  • Using my 80% off coupon code, I ended up paying just $2
  • As soon as you purchase the gift certificate, you can personalize it and send it to someone else or just print it off for yourself.
  • This restaurant required you to have a $35 minimum order and most all of them add an automatic 18% gratuity to the check.
  • So, we had an appetizer, our 2 meals and drinks as well as a dessert and our bill came to $42 (without tip).
  • Using the gift certificate, it brought our total to $21 and added $3.25 tip.  I added another $4 for a tip and we had our entire $48 meal ($41+$7 tip) for just $30 ($21+$7 tip+$2 gift certificate cost).
  • That was an $18 savings over what we would have paid anyway without the gift certificate!
We've also found a new restaurant that we love on top of the savings!

Right now there is a 50% off code: SUNNY

Bon appetite!

Made the Decision on the Mixer!

After a lot of talking to people (thanks to all of you) and reading more on-line reviews than I'm willing to admit, I have finally made my decision on what mixer to get.

I'm going with the KitchenAid Artisan mixer. What really made my decision was the $30 + $12 rebates (yep, you get the $30 rebate on the mixer and a $12 rebate if you don't want their free magazine) they put out just this week that goes until October. I has made up my mind to buy the cheaper selection of the KitchenAid Classic (smaller bowl, less power, and only comes in white) because I figured why spend an extra $100 just for a color and .5 quarts extra room? HOWEVER, the rebate(s) are not good on this model, so for an extra $20 I can get it all!  This is just a picture of the white one.....click on the link and you can view all the purtiful colors!!!
I still plan on waiting to see what happens with the prices on Amazon over the next couple months (if I can keep myself from buying it now) so I can earn up more Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks! Right now I have $30 left waiting in the wings......ah, could it possibly be that I get a FREE KitchenAid mixer just by searching the internet and taking surveys????

Not familiar with Swagbucks? See my post here about it- to date I have earned (13) $5 Amazon gift cards!  I LOOOOOOVVVEEE free moolah!

Free Amazon Prime Membership for 1 Year

I just read this post on CommonSenseWithMoney:

".....Amazon is offering a full year of Amazon Prime ($79 value) to college students. To get this freebie you will need a valid .edu e-mail address and specify college, year and major...."

For those of you in college or with kids in college, this is a GREAT freebie!  I am a graduate student alumni, so I still have my college e-mail account active and was able to take advantage of this.  The best thing is you don't need to set up a new Amazon account to take advantage of this.  I logged in with my standard e-mail/account and was just asked to put in my college e-mail address so they could send me a verification link.  The free PRIME membership is tied to my standard e-mail/account.

This is great to have in time for birthdays and Christmas ordering!

Stand Mixer ?

I'm thinking about getting a stand mixer. It seems that the "one" to get is the KitchenAid stand mixer. Does anyone have any experience with a stand mixer and can offer feedback on what kind to buy (and not to buy) and their limitations? I'm thinking I'd mainly use it for the meat grinding attachments, making dough and pasta, etc.

Comments?? Suggestions???

Food Lion Clearance & My Trip

For those of you who like the Velveeta block cheese, the Food Lion on 419 had the Kraft version of this on clearance for $1.99. You can probably find some Kraft q's for this too.

As a side note...this Food Lion has been rennovated, but the aisles haven't been changed so you don't have to worry about learning a new layout. I am just loving this little old lady there named Bobbi.....she is the sweetest thing and LOVES people who use coupons.

Today I got:
1- Capri Sun $2.07
1- Planter's Flavor Grove peanuts $2.49 (kinda pricey, but I wanted to try these since I had a coupon)
4- Breyer's yogurt $.50/ea
2- Philly cream cheese spread tubs $2/ea
1- Best Life butter tub $.99/ea

After coupons:
$2 Capri Sun FLIP
$1/2 Philly booklet
$.40/2 Philly mailer
$1/4 Breyer's booklet
$1.50 Planters IP
$1/1 Best Life booklet

I paid $4.50 for it all. Heck, the cream cheese alone usually costs that much!

Walgreens Clearance Find

I found a great deal at the 419/221 Wags today. They had a 5 pack of stand-up acrylic frames with a bonus 20 sheet photo paper for just $1.29. These make such good Christmas gifts, especially when you put pics of the kids and let them decorate the frame for grandma!  Found these in the middle aisle end cap near the school supply row.

As a side note....they had PLENTY of the $0.19/ea 10-pk pencils there, so don't worry that they're out of stock on such a great buy this late in the week.

Printer Comments

I'm looking for an inexpensive printer to use at home.  I hate that ink jet printers cost so much in ink, so I thought I'd look at a LaserJet.  Anyone have this printer??

Inventories at Wags and CVS

For the first week ever I have found everything in stock that's free after RR or ECB at all my local stores. I think it's probably because most of their freebies have been the same products that have been free for several weeks now. How much body wash can one person really need?? :o)

Even on Friday, Wags on 419 has a full stock of ProGlide razors and Gillette/Old Spice body wash! So, if you thought that you were too late for this week's deals, head on out to the store!

Bonus Swagbucks!

Do you remember my post about how great Swagbucks is?  I have now won (9) $5 Amazon gift cards to date for doing little more than searching the internet like I normally do and using their various tools (surveys, polls, toolbar, etc).

If you join Swagbucks by 11:59pm PDT tonight, you can score an extra 20 Swagbucks by using the code SweetTweeting (case sensitive)- that means you'll start with 50 Swag Bucks instead of the normal 30!

Go here to join up and start earning free gift cards and other products!  If you're looking for all of the great ways to earn, just drop me an email or post a comment after you join.  I'll tell you all the quick ways to earn the greatest amount of Swagbucks you can!

Kroger Vent

I hate the Ridgewood Farms Kroger in Salem. They have the most useless people working there at 5:30 PM! My cashier was a smelly idiot and couldn't even speak English, and he tried to tell me on all of my 30 coupons that I didn't get what the coupon called for (uh, yeah I did....I'm not stupid). My bagger was a 200 year old woman who took 2 solid minutes to fill one bag (I took my reusable bags out from in front of her and started filling them as the items came down the line from over top of the check signing counter). The front end leader couldn't figure out how to use my $25 prescription bonus and told me any IP's had to be in color (uh, the freakin' coupon even says "may be printed in B&W or color....DUH). They sent a produce guy to the parking lot to find a manager for the prescription issue (couldn't find her and they pressed the wrong key and I didn't get my $25 off). They tried to do all sorts of mgr overrides on the register before ever even trying to scan my IP's.

I HATE HATE HATE going to that Kroger. For the life of me I can't figure out why I keep doing it when there are 2 other Kroger's I pass on the way home. Ugh.
