I skimmed through this book and found that while it is part of a larger series, you don't need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. The book is written for the young adult/teen age group so it's not as gripping to me as others I have read. While not firmly based in Christianity, it has undertones of God and Christian themes. I don't really enjoy books or movies that have a lot of "flash back" moments, but this book at least wasn't overly bothersome to me because it was well written.
